White Clover
Trifolium repens
A low growing perennial, white clover (Trifolium repens) has spreading stems that root at the nodes. The leaves consist of three leaflets (in a shamrock shape) which are hairless, finely toothed, often with a white heart shaped markings. The flowers are white with a pink tinge, and grouped in round heads 1.5-3cm in diameter. Widely distributed and very common in New Zealand, white clover is found in pasture, lawns, cultivated and waste land. It plays a big part in the honey bee industry with clover honey being the most common honey type in New Zealand.
