Nematodes
Nematodes (often referred to as threadworms) are tiny soil dwelling multicellular organisms. There are some species of nematodes that are plant parasitic and feed on plant roots. Root knot nematodes are common in New Zealand soils and can be a serious pest of carrots and maize. For carrots, typical damage symptoms include forking and stunting of roots which makes them unmarketable. In maize, symptoms include crop stunting.
